Getting to the island : Kamala

Kamala Beach

The beach is a favoured spot for witnessing sunsets. The northern end of Kamala Beach is suitable for swimming. Kamala is substantially more relaxed than some of the other areas in Phuket. It is also a lot quieter the beach is deserted more often than not; ideal for taking in some sun or just sitting and relaxing. A number of hotels and guesthouses sit along the road leading to the beach and provide accommodation that meets any budget. A number of stalls sell fresh food at very reasonable prices meaning you can pick at something all day if you like For those looking for great views, Khao Phanthurat is about 30 metres above sea level and from the top you can get an excellent perspective of Kamala’s 2.5 kilometer long ‘half moon’ of a bay. Phuket FantaSea is located to the north of the beach.

Activities:

The Beach
Kamala Beach is a beautiful long stretch of beach that's pretty deserted, even in high season. The main reason it's deserted is there aren't the same high numbers of tourists in Kamala as some other places so there's plenty of space. A day spent on the beach is truly a lazy day, not too many distractions... perfect. May to October the waves at the north end of the beach attract surfers.

Surfing
Kamala beach in-spite of this has a very relaxed atmosphere. It is a popular rental area for people who are staying a few months or more on the island. Budget Kamala guesthouses and restaurants. If you take the first left turn at the bottom of the hill, coming from Patong, you will come to a small bridge continue to the left and you will find two isolated small beaches opposite Kamala Bay Terrace Resort, no surf here, but a good place to relax and do a bit of snorkelling and it overlooks all of Kamala's surf spots. Further out to the headland you can see a surfing point break which works on a mid-tide, on a swell over 1 metre. Surf between the island and the headland.

Jet-Skiing
If you follow the dictates of common sense and the rules that are summarized below, you should have a good and safe time with these unique and exciting watercraft. The first thing to remember is that Jet Skis can be legally operated at only five beaches in Phuket: Patong, Karon, Kata, Kamala, and Bangtao. This shouldn't be an inconvenience for anyone as these are the most popular beaches on the island. Even if someone has what looks like a Jet Ski concession at another beach, don't rent from them. You risk a substantial fine and possible imprisonment.

Shopping:

Not exactly a shopper's paradise, Kamala nevertheless has a number of shops and street stalls selling inexpensive beach and sportswear and souvenirs. During the high season, vendors set up along the walkway by the beach selling mainly beach clothes, hats and low-cost souvenirs.

You'll find most shops conveniently close to the beach restaurants. Here, you can also find handicrafts, silk scarves, sarongs and toys. Stalls set up around 10:00 and stay open until late. For the necessities of life, there are a number of minimarts in the village, a chemist and some small souvenir and leisure ware shops.

Kamala's Main Road has most of the local western style shops and small supermarkets in the area. There's also a small internet cafe along with the usual tailor shops that can make copies of your favourite shirt or suit.
