Wine Connection Deli & Bistro

The Wine Connection has done pretty well here in Phuket. I remember when it first opened in Chalong, although the first store was farther North in the Laguna area, it was mostly considered a high-end restaurant. My friends and I would have dinner there on occasion when the fancy took us, but it always felt like you were going to spend a lot—it just wasn’t your everyday sort of place.

Well, there seems to have been a change of menus recently and I’ve found myself going more often. The change hasn’t been a away from their Italian style cuisine or a reduction in quality or variety; no, the change has been a big reduction in price. The coffee, pizza, and all the other comparable items on the menu are now about as cheap as you can find them anywhere in Phuket. The lattes, for example, are only 60 Baht, which is just crazy cheap. Sure, some of the imported menu items are still expensive, but that’s to be expected since most of the cost is tax and they’re expensive everywhere.

For such a bargain price, you get one of the nicest ambiances of any restaurant in Phuket. At all their locations they have nice comfortable chairs setup outside and in the evenings they light little candles on the tables and do a good job with the other lighting. The wine bottles are displayed very nicely and give the place some atmosphere. It’s very relaxing and most dinners there go for a few hours over some wine and good conversation.

The food is very good; not magnificent, but very good. Their Patong restaurant even has a few special items on the menu which are a nice addition to the already good selection in Chalong. As one would expect from a restaurant with “wine” in its name, the selection of wines is very good. The house wines are nicely chosen and even the cheaper selections are still drinkable. To fit the occasion, all the wines are served in the appropriate glass and the wines can either be chilled or served at room temperature according to your preference.

It’s a really well done experience and in terms of service, ambiance, and quality one of the best deals on the island. The service is sometimes a little difficult to flag down because of the large floor space and because many of the nicest tables are the ones farthest away from the main counters. Still, since you’re probably not going there for a quick meal, it’s not likely to be a problem.
